Women suspected of witchcraft have always been persecuted, but in the 1640s this turned into a frenzy. Matthew Hopkins, the self-styled Witchfinder General, found many victims in Essex. Lucy, caring at first for her grandmother, and then, after her death, living peacefully in her cottage, is caught up in the fever, and not even the protection of the Squire can help her.
