Nurse Hal Among The Amish

Emma Lapp is getting married. Her excitement soon turns to dread. She has so many details to take care of and nothing is going right. Her husband-to-be is missing. She worries that he may have changed his mind since he hired a flirting, pretty woman for sales clerk in his shop. Emma isn't going to marry Adam with blind faith in him which leads the bishop to call her a doubting Thomas.

Fall was normally a routine season in Amish Country with harvest taking up much of the Plain farmers time. But one fall near Wickenburg, Iowa wasn't normal. Jacob Stolfus's barn burnt down. After Sheriff Dawson investigated, he said the fire was arson. Next the Briskey cornfield burnt. Nurse Hall was attacked in her barn and left for dead with a fire spreading around her. Amish faith is tested.

This spring in the Amish community finds Nurse Hal and Emma Keim expecting babies. Emma gets bad news about her twins and finds she's being stalked by a serial attacker Englisher. She manages to keep away from him, but Adam's store clerk isn't as lucky. After word spread about the attack, she finds Bobby Keim no longer wants to marry her, and the Amish community is calling her Second Hand Goods.

Nurse Hal's parents receive word their nephew and his wife have died. A daughter that will be put in foster care if no one claims her. Against Tootie's objections, Nora and Jim send for Joy. The Lindstroms enjoy the girl's look at life, but Tootie has trouble getting used to her. She warns that Joy is fond of an Amish boy.

An overnight camping trip ends tragically, and Joy's romance with Jimmie Miller is halted by his stepfather. This turns into the worst summer of Joy's life.
