This is a poem about domestic violence. The woman in the poem refuses to leave while her neighbors and friends plead with her. The violence is seen through the woman's eyes as well as the people around her. Her children have begun to follow in her footsteps and this should be reason enough to leave her abusive husband but she makes no attempt to escape her fate.
