Carlos Paula, a Cuban, had a brief career in the major leagues with the Washington Senators. He was exceptional for he became the first dark-skinned Cuban to play for the Washington American League baseball franchise. Earlier Cubans with lighter skin color had made the grade for the Nationals. In 1954 race was a big issue because most of the teams fans were born south of the Mason-Dixon line.
