Shannon and Ally were so happy it was Spring.
“Finally!” said Shannon. “Now, I can ride my new bike!”
“And I can play hopscotch on the driveway!” said Ally.
The sisters had been waiting for Spring all through the long winter days. They had enjoyed making snowmen and going sliding in the snow, but Spring was so much better.
“Soon the tulips will come out!” said Shannon.
“And the butterflies too!” said Ally.
Spring in Ottawa was a beautiful thing. Every day the sun got brighter and warmer. Shannon and Ally put away their winter clothes and got out their light Spring clothes. They put away their snow boots and got out their rain boots. They put away their snow suits and got out their Spring jackets. They even got out their sunglasses because the sun was so bright.
Just before Spring came, there was St. Patrick’s Day. Everybody dressed in green. Even Becca their golden retriever had a green hat.
“Happy St. Paddy’s Day!” said Shannon.
“Happy St. Paddy’s Day too!” laughed Ally.

“Look at my green hair!” said Ally.
“Look at my green glasses!” said Shannon.
“Look at me!” said Becca.

Everybody was wearing the green!
Shannon and Ally got in the car with Becca and Mommy and Daddy and Grandma Kate and they all went for a nice drive to the other side of the river to Quebec. They drove until they came to a little town called Wakefield and got out to look around. It was in a big park called Gatineau. Along the river was a bridge all covered over. It was a fun place to explore!

“Let’s go inside the bridge,” said Shannon. “We can walk all the way to the other end. But don’t fall into the river. It looks very, very cold!”
“I won’t fall,” said Ally. “I have Becca with me. She will catch me!”

They got to the end of the bridge and went for a long walk all the way to the other side. They could look over the edge at the water far below.
“It does look a long way down!” said Ally.
“Don’t jump!” said Shannon.
And Becca wagged her tail to say she would go wherever they went.

It was so much fun at the covered bridge that Shannon and Ally almost forgot to have lunch. They all went to a nice little restaurant in the village of Wakefield and had a grilled cheese sandwich with French Fries.
“Of course, they are French!” said Shannon. “We are in Quebec!”
Ally laughed and ate hers all up, right down to the last French fry.
Outside the restaurant was a carving of a black bear made out of a tree trunk. Shannon and Ally went to say Hello.

“Hello, Mister Bear,” said Ally. “Did you come out of the woods?”
The bear did not say a word.
So Shannon tried. “Hello, Mister Bear,” she said. “Are you a friendly bear?”
But the bear did not say a word.
Shannon and Ally gave it a pat on the head and turned around to go away. Suddenly they heard a loud roar. They jumped and ran into the car. Then they heard Daddy laugh.
“Oh, you are a scary old bear!” Ally said.
When they got home from Quebec they went outside because it was such a nice Spring day. They rode their bikes up and down and played hopscotch on the driveway.

“This is how you play hopscotch,” said Ally.
And she jumped up and down in the boxes made out of chalk. Shannon joined her and soon they were both having fun.

But all too soon it was getting dark and it was time to go inside and get ready for bed.
“What a nice Spring day!” said Shannon.
“I’m loving it!” laughed Ally.
And before they knew it, they were fast asleep.
