We had some unforeseen difficulties in the office and had to train new employees. Conversely, there are new writers under the Wyld Pegasus banner so we would like to take this time to welcome Martin Kloess and Robin Roberts to the Wyld Pegasus family. Serial Thrillerz would like to thank the 25 people who downloaded the previous edition of this newsletter. However, the staff voted and decided that it would better circulation if we returned to our previous name, “Screamin’ Crier,” the title we used during our previous successful run. Membership Drive Wyld Pegasus’ subsidiaries (Wishloss Writer’s Guild, Serial Thrillerz Louisiana, and San Antonio Thrillerz) are seeking new members. Wishloss is an international writer’s guild with its headquarters in Houma, LA. Those who are able to travel are invited to join us at the Houma-Terrebonne Main Branch of the Public Library in March every year to attend the Jambalaya Writer’s Conference. There are workshops taught by NY Times Best Selling Authors including Cherry Adair and Heather Graham and contests with the grand prize being ten minutes with a major New York editor. Our goal is to create our own yearly writer’s conference in October. October is a busy month for us as New Orleans has the horror movie festival and the Serial Thrillerz chapters have their own festival. We’d like to orchestrate this to be the last week of October, leaving Halloween day and early evening to those members with families. Of course, those members who have been with us for some time know that one of our senior members, Jason throws a killer Halloween party. It is a family tradition that started with his mother long before he and I met as high school juniors. For students at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, LA I will be meeting with Dr. Connor this fall semester, August 2012 to speak with her about having a chapter on campus. She has already taught a popular senior level horror movie English class and is now planning on teaching a sophomore level course on horror movies this fall. Dr. Connor says the sophomore course is a writing intensive course and is different from the senior level course in which they actually watched the movies. Wishloss is also calling for our writers and fans to submit short stories and poetry to our Wishloss anthology, Raw Emotion. Raw Emotion 2012 will be released the first week of August 2012 in all electronic formats. For those interested in submitting please email Jillian at wishlosswritersguild@gmail.com with Raw Emotion submission in the subject line. Please include your name and contact information. Author Update We have two new authors at Wyld Pegasus, Martin Kloess and Robin Roberts. Mr. Kloess is an anchor at All Voices, a retired music professor from San Francisco, who recently released a humorous book of limericks entitled, “That Was That.” Mr. Kloess’ book is currently available for download on all e-reader formats, and is available for purchase by visiting https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/160146 Mr. Roberts is a native of Oregon and has a series of young adult fiction entitled “Sorenson’s Gift.” It will be released this month and hopefully a sample chapter will be included in the July edition of this newsletter. Social Media Wyld Pegasus is live on the web in multiple locations. June saw the creation of a blog/news site via Word Press simply entitled, “Wyld Pegasus.” It is the location where we will post the most up to date news. Ellender Library has recently trashed seven dumpsters full of books that are still in wonderful condition. Please join us to say NO to the destruction of a valuable resource! AMC Stubs Program If you live in an area where there is an AMC theater they have a program in which they support repeat visitors. For $12 a month, you can join the AMC Stubs Program. The benefits to this are: if you buy your ticket online, you pay no fees. If you buy a certain size at the AMC snack bar, you get a free upgrade to the next available size. There is an online scrap book of stubs to track what movies you like. This may seem kind of creepy but it’s just for the member’s personal enjoyment. They do not spam you with offers for similar projects. Finally, once you spend $100 in their theater (you have to swipe your membership card or use the membership number online) you earn a $10 gift certificate applied to your Stubs card. I am about $20 away myself from receiving the $10 gift certificate. This gift certificate can be used at any AMC Theater for tickets or at the snack bar. Considering that on average a ticket is $10 then you get to see a movie on them. Sign up at your local theater or visit https://www.amcstubs.com/ Horror Movies at Special Prices Most people are aware that books can be found at local book stores in a used condition that is still acceptable and almost as pleasing as new books. In some cases, vintage book stores are often more enjoyable and friendly than large chain stores like Barnes and Noble or Books a Million. How many actually know the same can be said for movies? There is a place I go, that I cannot off the top of my head remember the name of where you can get almost new or brand new movies for sometimes as much as 75% off. No, I am not talking about Amazon but this is an actual store on Grand Caillou Road in Houma that I visit. It’s not a small independently run video store that specializes in cult classics. Although there are a few cult classics but it is more about the quality and quantity. It is actually a pawn shop. It is not trashy but it’s not as glamorous as Pawn Stars or Hardcore Pawn. The place, I believe is called EZ Pawn. They have movies for $2.99 each. Television collections that are grouped by the season are $9.99. They do have a policy where if you buy four movies you get them for $9.99. So basically it is buy three and get the fourth movie for free. The reason I like this store is because I am a big fan of the Highlander franchise. I bought seasons two through six for $10 each. Amazon listed all six seasons for $120. So even though I had to order Season one from another location I still saved 50% of what I would have paid if I had bought the bundle on Amazon. One day when I went it they had the entire Friends collection. That show started when I was in junior high and continued well on after I was an adult. Another time they were flooded with wrestling videos. I am smiling as I write this because the first time I went it, I ended up leaving with more than $200 worth of movies. Yes, I did spend a considerable portion (including the first three Saw movies) to expand my horror movie collection to inspire my Supernatural Saturday Night column and to fuel the rabid horror fans that join Serial Thrillerz. For those of you who wonder, there is no charge to be a member of Serial Thrillerz; however there is a charge for the annual convention in October. We have to cover expenses such as transportation and reservations at haunted locations. Coming Soon! For fans of the action adventure show, Burn Notice, get ready to be excited! June 14, 2012 is the season five premiere! Michael seems to be dangerously obsessed with breaking fee out of prison. He is so distraught over Fiona’s sacrificing herself and turning herself over to the authorities that fun-loving Sam Axe is the voice of reason. From the previews that USA has been running it seems that Michael’s obsession is more than proving Fiona’s innocence. He actually is trying to break her out of jail. Those who have followed the show know that Michael is cool, calm, and collected. He doesn’t often lose his temper but sometimes shows that he is of ill humor often due to the bickering that Sam and Fiona do. Jeffery Donovan is a wonderfully actor who is a master of nonverbal clues to portray how his character is feeling. A simple facial expression from Donovan often does more than most actors can do with an entire monologue. I know where I will be. In front of my 42” flat screen trying to figure out just how the mature responsible mantle shifted from Michael to Sam. In another words, I’m tuning in to see how Sam’s screwy attitude and long standing friendship with Michael gets bungled up to get Michael in yet another difficult situation. The Screamin’ Crier staff would like to thank: Dr. James Stewart is the Mass Communications Department head at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, LA for teaching pop culture within his Mass Communication classes, thereby promoting all forms of entertainment within an educational setting. Dr. Katherine Conner, Associate English professor at Nicholls State University, is the advisor to the NSU creative writing anthology, The Mosaic and its online e-zine, Gris-Gris. She is also the professor responsible for making horror movies educationally relevant. She teaches a 400 level horror movie course in the spring where they view and review horror movies and a English 102 writing intensive course based on horror movies. Katherine Tracy is an Associate English professor at Nicholls and owner of Thunder Rain Publishing in Thibodaux. Ms. Tracy has been an inspiration to the many students who have traveled the road less traveled by choosing Creative Writing at Nicholls. Alyson Blythe is the Humanities Department head and is also “The Destroyer of Lives,” a nickname that she endorses with her poisonous green ink pens. She shares our senior editor’s love of the macabre and advocates the individuality of all artists…for writers are just artists with a pen and not a brush. Last but not least, Peter Jenkins, my rainbow warrior who inspires me, (Kristina) with the need to stand up for what is right, choosing to stand up for the oppressed and the voiceless.
