Michael Moves In

Michael and his family just moved into their new house. They were busy all day unpacking the moving truck. Michael’s mother put his boxes of toys and clothes in the closet in his new bedroom.
“We’ll unpack these after the truck is unloaded,” she told him.
The truck took forever to unpack. Michael became bored with helping and went to his new room to play. He took some of his favorite toys out of the boxes. He played quietly in his room with the toys.He knew that his mother was very busy and if he made too much noise, she would remember that he was supposed to be helping, so he played very quietly.
As he played Michael heard a noise coming from his closet. Frightened he ran from the bedroom into the kitchen. His mother had stopped unloading the truck and was cooking their dinner.
“Mommy, there is a monster in my closet!” he told her.
“Don’t be silly Michael, there are no monsters in your closet,” she said, “now go get cleaned up for dinner.”
Michael washed his hands and face, then went back into his room to play until dinner was ready. Soon he heard the noise in his closet again. Even though he was scared, he peeked into the closet.
It was very dark in the closet. The boxes of unpacked toys and clothes were stacked up in the corners. This is a great place for a monster to hide, Michael told himself.
He heard something move behind a box of toys. This scared him very much, but he wanted the monster to go away so he yelled into the dark closet.
“You better get out of my closet Monster!” he yelled but there was no answer.
“Michael come to dinner, he heard his mother call.
“I’ll be back,” he warned the monster in his closet.
At dinner, Michael told his family about the monster in his closet. His sister, who was much older than him, laughed at the whole idea. His father didn’t seem to have an interest in the monster either way. But his mother told him that there were no monsters.
She told him that he was frightened because this was a new house. After time he would not be afraid anymore.
“But Mom there IS a monster in my closet. I heard him!” he insisted.
“Ok he lets go see the monster in your closet,” she told him after dinner.
Michael and his mom went into his room and looked into the dark closet. His mom moved the boxes around to show him that there was no monster in the closet.
“See, there is no monster here,” she told him, “Now go take a bath.”
Michael took another look into the closet and shook his head. Just like a monster, to hide when there was an adult around.

The Monster

When Michael’s mother was in the closet she scared the little monster away. He ran to get his own mother. Mommy there is a boy in my room, the frightened monster cried.
“Don’t be silly there are no boys in your room,” she told him. To prove that there were no boys in the little monsters room, his mother took him to the room to look.
They searched every corner of the bright room. There was no little boy in the room.
“Now go get dirty for bed,” she told the scared little monster. The little monster took another look into the bright room and shook his head. He wondered where the boy could have gone.

Michael And The Monster Meet

Michael finished his bath and dressed for bed. He kept an eye on the closet at all times. Even though he did not hear any noises from the closet anymore, he was not taking any chances.
Michael’s mother came into the room and tucked him in. She kissed him on the forehead and said goodnight.
“Mommy can you leave my light on?” he asked.
“How about if I just crack the door a little? Sweet dreams,” she winked at Michael as she left the room.
Michael tried to go to sleep but he was still afraid of the monster in the closet. He stayed awake for a very long time. In the closet the monster’s mom untucked him and wished him scary dreams.
“But mommy what about the boy in my room?” he cried.
“Silly little monster, there are no boys in your room.”
But the monster was scared so he stayed awake for a very long time.
Late at night Michael became very tired he could barely stay awake any longer. He decided to check the closet one more time. Then he could go to sleep. He turned his bedroom light on and went to the closet door.
The little monster heard the boy move and saw the light come on. He was afraid of the light and the boy so he ran and hid in the corner behind the boxes of toys and clothes.
“Go away scary monster leave my closet right now,” Michael yelled into the dark closet. The little monster was so scared he tried to make himself smaller so the little boy wouldn’t find him.
Michael rummaged through the boxes of clothes and toys looking for the scary monster. The frightened monster was trapped in the corner. He was so afraid his whole body was shaking. But he knew he had to save himself from the scary boy.
“Go away scary boy leave my room!” he yelled as loud as he could.
“AHHHH!” Michael screamed and the monster yelled at the same time.
The monster jumped back into his bed and covered his head. Michael jumped back into his own bed and covered his own head. Michael and the monster hid under their covers until morning.
“Mommy I saw the monster last night! He was very big and scary!” Michael told his mother.
“There are no monsters in your closet Michael,” his mother said. “No monster in his right mind would go into your room,” his sister snapped.
“You shouldn’t be afraid of monsters,” his dad told him.
At the monsters breakfast table the little monster told his family about the boy in his room.
“You shouldn’t be afraid of boys,” the monsters Daddy told him.
“There are no boys in your room,” his mother insisted.
But Michael and the monster knew different.
About the Authors

This book was written by Lisa Lewis Moon and her son Michael Paul Moon when Michael was just five years old. Lisa was working on a screenplay titled Betrayals (soon to be available). Michael would come and sit on her lap and she would open a new file and start writing about Michael and the Monster. Her son Michael would help her decide what would happen in the story. It was a great joy writing with her son.
Michael is now a senior in High School and will graduate in 2011! He continues to have a vivid imagination although Lisa can not seem to get him to put his stories in writing...yet.
