In the late 1930s the technique of refueling in flight offered considerable advantages for both civil and military transports. Civil trials began in August 1939 and the application for military types especially VLR bombers was obvious nonetheless it was not until SAC post-WW II decided to deploy B-29 and B-50 that the military decided that tanker airplanes as today serve as force multipliers.
