Richard Kauffman was a multi-sport athlete at Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania. He played with several minor league baseball teams and briefly in the American League, with the St. Louis Browns. His tenure in the majors was curtailed when Hall of Fame 1st Baseman, George Sisler, joined the St. Louis Browns in 1915. Kauffman became a flour mill executive for a time in Atlanta, Georgia.

In 1956 the University of Nebraska hired Pete Elliott to coach its football team. The new coach was a 29-year-old former All-American football player at the University of Michigan. He won 12 letters at UM. The Big 7 conference, of which NU was a member, was dominated by Bud Wilkinson's Oklahoma Sooners. Elliott coached backs at OU before coming to Nebraska. He brought with him the Split-T offense.
