He started this profitable venture during the Great Depression in 1933. Giuseppe Masseria was involved in gambling, bootlegging, and also the food industry racket. Newspapers from the 1930s wrote that his power rivaled that of Al Capone, who he may have worked with or for. It is interesting that Masseria was lured from his base in Harlem to his death some distance away in Coney Island. It was a savage time in the history of organized crime, the beginning of the 1930s.
