When the USN deployed its Fleet Fighters to south-east Asia it had barely recovered from its experiences with the Cutlass probably one of the worst naval combat planes of all time. Nonetheless the shortage of naval combat plane at the time and the need to stay ahead of the game against the MiGs and SAM threats a number of thoroughbreds emerged both for the Navy and the Marines to help end the war
