The Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet in 2011 is well established with the US Navy Atlantic and Pacific Fleets as their premier air combat asset having superseded the F-14 Tomcat or Bombcat as the F-14D was known. The Tomcat had replaced the A-4, the A-7 Corsair II and the A-6 Prowler before it. For a while the Tomcat and the early Hornet shared the strike fighter mission now it's the F/A-18E/F alone
