5th September 1918 is accepted as the birth of the Polish AF. On that day the first combat flown from the liberated Poland by an aircraft resplendent in Polish national colors and manned by a Polish crew. From this time even though the PAF suffered a crushing defeat by the Luftwaffe due to lack of airplanes it survived the post-WW II communist era (producing Soviet designs) and is now part of NATO
