Hong Kuiyuan tells his personal story of the collapse, in 1864, of the Christian theocracy established by his uncle, the first Heavenly King, during 'the Taiping Rebellion' in China. After his uncle's death his father and cousin, the new King, are captured and killed by the imperial Qing. The sixteen-year-old Kuiyuan is the only Hong to survive, and the fictional writer of this historical novella.
