In 1858 over two thousand German peasants left Prussia to settle in South Africa to replace the German Legionnaires who arrived a year earlier. This book deals with the conditions which led them to want to emigrate and the challenges they faced on arrival. Lists of military and peasant settler names and maps indicating where they came from and where they settled are included.
