When Peru was looking to replace its F-86 Sabre and Hawker Hunter fighters to make sure it could fight on equal terms with its neighbor Ecuador it turned to the Soviets for its new combat plane the Sukhoi Su-22 Fitter (later also purchasing the Su-25 Frogfoot ground-attack aircraft). These were the first Soviet jet combat planes to be deployed in the region and 17 out of the 40 remain in 2011.
