In 1956 the University of Nebraska hired Pete Elliott to coach its football team. The new coach was a 29-year-old former All-American football player at the University of Michigan. He won 12 letters at UM. The Big 7 conference, of which NU was a member, was dominated by Bud Wilkinson's Oklahoma Sooners. Elliott coached backs at OU before coming to Nebraska. He brought with him the Split-T offense.
