Life is grim and death frequent in the mills, mines and factories of the Hundred Towns; but records are precise. Then strange dark-skinned newcomers begin raising the newly dead by chanting a mantra. Town hall records can’t be wrong so each town’s Masters appoint Rectifiers to 're-decease' the 'discrepancies', as the newly risen are designated.
