The Dornier Do X 'Giant' skimmed along the surface of Lake Constance during its first take-off this historical event occurred at 9.38 am on 12 July 1929. Now all twelve Bristol Jupiter engines were running as the 'boat crossed the lake and after only a 500m take-off run it was 5m above the water Not all subsequent flights were as successful and on one occasion the 'Giant' failed to take-off!?
