The colony of South Carolina built Fort Loudoun in 1756 at the height of the French and Indian War. Built to foster relations with the Cherokee, the fort helped to secure the Overhill towns from French involvement. In 1760 the Cherokee besieged and captured the fort when the relationship soured, making Fort Loudoun the opening act in the Anglo Cherokee War of 1760-1762.
