The Devil's in the Detail

The hands on the clock moved towards midnight. Jackie was getting more and more nervous as the witching hour approached. It was not always a good thing taking a bet, but it was something Jackie could never refuse. Picking another twig up from the floor she dropped it into the metal bin that was doubling as her fire and her back up light. The twig caught and spluttered into life. She glanced around the room again. The fire was casting shadows on the walls making the place seem more eerie than it already felt. This was the inside hallway of 'Last Man Standing'. That was the quaint name of the mansion that she was currently cowering in.
Jackie stood up and walked across to the opposite wall. Her heels kicked dust up into the air as she walked. No one had lived here for about thirty years and it showed. She took the torch out of her pocket and turned it on. The lantern cast a harsh white fluorescent light around the room.
There was an old faded picture on the wall that attracted Jackie's curiosity. It showed a group of men in uniform. The one at the front she recognized as Major Joshua Madison. He was the last owner of the house she was currently in. She had heard about him from a ghost hunting program she had watched with her friends. The story was that the men in this picture had all put everything they had into a bank. Whoever survived the war got a share. It was their way of cementing their friendship. Joshua was the only man that survived the war. He did not like talking about that period of his life, but if cornered when drunk he always claimed that he had the luck of old Nick himself.

The author gives us a glimpse of his writing style in the form of 6 short stories, each of which were enjoyable and different to the next. In my opinion a short story should keep the reader guessing to the end, this was the case with these stories, and I particularly liked 'a flight of eagles'. The author is writing a novel at the moment and i would like to see how his stories progress.

They are certainly a good, quick read and i would rate them a 3/5, mainly because the descriptions could have been a little more creative but still a good read.
