The 220a followed the basic concept of the 180 that was launched one year earlier. The new ponton concept had been tested and it had found the widest possible support from Mercedes’ customers, old and new. From now on it was smooth sailing. Daimler-Benz had established itself again as a serious contender in the premium automotive market and it had no intention to let go of it again. In the late 1950s, it introduced the first fuel injection for a mass produced vehicle. The general concept had been copied from the mighty 300SL and the luxurious 300d Adenauer.
