The 220 fintail series was the first serious attempt by Daimler-Benz to develop a sedan with an eye on the important North American market. That Karl Wilfert, head of the design department, wanted to do away with the fins at the last moment, did not spoil the success the car was able to enjoy in most export markets. It was bigger than any executive sedan, Daimler-Benz had launched before and its new safety features were beyond anything the competition had to offer.
