About Robert Philip Bolton

I was born in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1945.

After a successful career in the advertising business I began freelance writing in 1983 and have been a self-employed writer ever since.

Gradually I reduced my commercial writing and for the last few years have dedicated myself to my own work, preferring to write fiction mostly (but not only) about New Zealand and New Zealanders.

I love all good writing from all eras; my biggest influences have been Virginia Woolf and Katherine Mansfield for their insights and purity of text, Lytton Strachey for his precision and clarity, and Beatrix Potter for her charm. Other favourites include Shakespeare, of course, Colette, Fitzgerald, Forster, Hemmingway, Isherwood, Joyce, Milne, Waugh and many others.

My other interests lie firmly in the arts: art, music, opera, ballet and the theatre. On the other hand I also love rugby league and have supported the New Zealand Warriors since their foundation in 1995. I enjoy gardening and playing the saxophone.

My wife, who is also a writer, and I live in Greenlane, Auckland, New Zealand.
