Ebook short description
A successful professional dies suddenly. A voice tells him he's wasted his life but has the chance to return to Earth in ghostly form and witness others making the same mistakes as he did. Expecting to reappear in the boardroom he's bewildered to find himself following the antics of cult leader Cyrus Jones, self-proclaimed representative of of the Earth Goddess, and his down-at-heel followers.
The novel’s narrator, a successful Information Technology professional, is killed by a falling software manual. The novel’s narrator, a successful Information Technology professional, is killed by a falling software manual. Shortly thereafter he is informed by a heavenly authority that he has been wasting his life and is to be returned to the earth in ghostly form to witness, and learn from, others making the same mistakes as himself. Expecting to reappear in the company boardroom (or at least the executive canteen) the narrator is bewildered and unnerved to find himself following the unsavoury antics of cult-leader Cyrus Jones, self-proclaimed representative of the Earth Goddess, and his down-at-heel followers.
The narrator’s attention is drawn principally to Anna, a long-time cult-member struggling to free herself from the sexually and psychologically abusive world of the prophet Jones, and Colin, an alienated, alcoholic philosophy graduate who makes the journey from sceptical novice to fanatical follower.
During his enforced period of observation the narrator gradually and grudgingly comes to see much of himself reflected in the deluded, mean-spirited Colin and the manipulative, misogynous Jones.
But he finds his redemption in Anna. Having initially dismissed her as a weak-willed, dumb blond, he comes to acknowledge her strength and courage as she faces her shame and breaks the emotional chains that bind her to Cyrus Jones. In recognising Anna’s fortitude the narrator discovers his own humanity and sets himself free.
