He makes a nice foil for Catherine, who is basically good hearted but makes some dumb choices... Since I liked these people, I was interested in what happened to them, and a lot happened. The book is fast-paced, with plenty of action and dialogue... I read more historical romances than i care to admit :) but this one stand out, i recommend it for those who are already a little bit weary of the typical line but still crave to read a historical romances (like me :P )
