Extended description

Suze Hall is at a crossroads. Her nemesis at work, Wanda, has been promoted and now will be her boss. Her husband, Bob, is leaving her and the three kids for a six-month sabbatical down under. To top it off, her best friend, Marcia, is missing in action—playing footsie with some new boyfriend!

Adding to this disaster stew, David, the gorgeous hunk who broke her young-girl's heart has coincidentally popped back into her life and has something she desperately needs to keep her job.

Walking with Elephants, a lighthearted slice-of- life story, brings to the table the serious work/family issues facing women today. It explores the modern dichotomy of a workplace that is filled with homemakers who still must cook, clean, carpool on nights and weekends, shop for prom dresses, and "create" the holidays—such as Suze. But it also is filled with women who have the same drive as men, have no family responsibilities, and will do what ever it takes to get ahead. (Read more)

Walking with Elephants
Commiserate over workplace politics, titillate your sexual fantasies, ride the wave of a working mother, and fall down laughing. Fun read for working women/mothers. Maybe it's time for society to become matriarchal, like elephants where females are in charge. Julia Bell, soprano

I think this book was a great example of the strength and resilience of women. So many of the episodes in the main character's life were similar to things going on in my own workplace that I couldn't help but sympathize and feel encouraged by the ultimate outcome. The scene with Nat and Wanda outside the restaurant was especially rewarding! A story with ups and downs emotionally but leaves you with a feeling of achievement in the end.

I loved this book! The character was great - if not a bit of a pushover with her family. I felt the book dealt with the reality of women in the workplace in that era. The issues with channeling (see comments below) were not an issue for me. Just part of the story, I didn't need to agree, just read!

Every woman I know has had not this exact experience but the same kind of experience and felt that freezing moment of panic when your world not only gets turned upside down but squashed. Funny story , well written with some laugh out loud moments. Has a dash of Erma Bombeck and a pinch of Gloria Steinem. A very nice way to spend an afternoon in the sun.

i read this book on holiday, and ended up sitting in the shade so I could see the screen on my reader! as I love the sun, you can see how it gripped me. Ms. Bell has a unique style of writing, and it took me a couple of pages to 'get into it', but once there, I was hooked.
Her characters sprung off the page, and were believable, and yes, every one of them I though "oh you're just like...."
As in any book, there's a few niggles ( as the reviewer below I'm not too happy about the channelling of spirits—be cautious—) but over all, I say go read

This book really got to the point. It is so true. I think that it would appeal to the over 40 crowd , however the younger ages could get a hint of what might be coming later in life to them. I could identify with Suze in almost every way. I loved the best friend, Marcia and her character. Elliott is a riot! I've know some people like him. So fun! Suze and Bob (her professor husband) are living in the doldrums of being married a long time. She is unsure of her return to the workplace and all the things that go with that. The story of lost love is awesome. Overall I would reccomend this book.. the title threw me for awhile but after reading it I totally get it! Great , quick read!

This book has a fairly catchy story but a little too much of new age thinking for my liking. This book creates the atmosphere that channeling spirits is normal when it could possibly lead to demon possession imho. Please read with caution.
