“Listen up,” intoned the Tester Angel. “These Life Destiny scrolls indicate that by now, both Martha and David should be happily married. To each other.” He surveyed the two angelic faces before him. “Unfortunately, they are not married. In fact, they haven’t even met!”

“Oh dear,” said Earl quietly. He looked very pale--and worried.

“I need a cigarette,” said Gordon, nerves shot, hand groping for the packet of smokes in his pocket. To each other.” He surveyed the two angelic faces before him. “Unfortunately, they are not married. In fact, they haven’t even met!”

“Oh dear,” said Earl quietly. He looked very pale--and worried.

“I need a cigarette,” said Gordon, nerves shot, hand groping for the packet of smokes in his pocket.

“Oh-no-you-don’t. No smoking in this department of Heaven, Gordon!”

With a genuine show of reluctance, Gordon pulled his empty hand out of his pocket.

The tester continued, “Due to your neglect, idiots, Martha and David are both off on the wrong track. Martha thinks she’s in love with a man who is totally wrong for her. David is a confirmed bachelor. And neither of them are getting any younger!”

He grimly surveyed the two upturned faces. “Now, you must put them back on track for their Life Destiny Plans. That means in love with each other and planning to marry by year’s end! Otherwise, you'll both be demoted to the sixth level of Heaven, the Careening Department. And you know what that means: careening toward certain angelic disaster!”
