War Medal is one of the best short stories that I have ever read. McCreesh's strength is in his ability to penetrate the art of characterization via dialogue. I look forward to reading more of McCreesh's short stories as I have been a big fan of his poems and of his letters, but I am now in awe of his short stories!

War Medal will make your skin crawl in a profound way as it details the story of a 12 year old boy spending the day with his father's best friend from the Army Days, Buck. Buck is a man struggling with his own life story and Henry is eager to learn more about his father and enjoys Buck's idiosyncracies, a great story that leaves you in suspense.
Fat Chance is about Patrick, a working class man who has high hopes for his evening after a woman he knows and likes calls to ask if she can crash at his place. This story will leave you rooting for the underdog, to find out how it ends, you'll have to read it for yourself.

War Medal is poignant, funny, and touchingly powerful. A excellent coming of age story with a twist. I recommend it highly. Hosho McCreesh is becoming one of the best short story writers around. Read him!
