This short story demonstrates the way prejudice attitudes in our society control the way we perceive those around us. "Janie" reinforces the attitude that you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover.

This is a very good short story which maintains its grip on the reader from start to finish, and one feels they have been enlightened emotionally by reading it.
