(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis. Thanks to K. A. Tucker, and Supagurl blog tours.)
This is book 2 in the ‘Causal Enchantment’ series, and picks up where book 1 ‘Anthema’ left off.
**Warning – some unavoidable spoilers for book 1 ‘Anathema’**
At the end of Anathema, Sofie had magically transported Evangeline to the middle of nowhere to keep her safe, whilst Sofie herself dealt with the glut of ravenous vampires that Evangeline had managed to bring through from Ratheus to Earth.
Now, with Evangeline safe, it’s up to Sofie to sort out the Ratheus vampires, and to determine if Caden’s feelings for Evangeline are real.
How long will it take Viggo and Mortimer to find out where Evangeline is hidden? Can Sofie really sort out 120 Ratheus vampires by herself? And what of the mysterious Mage?
I enjoyed this book. It was nice to catch up with Evangeline and Sofie again and to see the progression of their story.
I was initially a little confused as the narrative starts with Sofie in this book, where previously it had mainly been with Evangeline, but I soon worked out what was going on!
Evangeline doesn’t see a whole lot of action in this book compared to the first, she’s stuck in some cabin in the middle of nowhere, whilst Sofie is the one in the thick of things. We learn quite a bit more about Sofie in this book, as well as Ratheus – the parallel world where Caden and the other vampires were living. Sofie seems to have really deep maternal feeling for Evangeine, that I don’t fully understand, to the extent that she would choose Evangeline’s life over that of her own sister Veronique.
Some questions were answered in this book, as were some problems, only it seems that as problems are solved, more develop!
Overall; a good second instalment.
7 out of 10.
