Excerpt:
A light dazzled off her side mirror. Tempest glanced back. Headlights blazed close behind her. She punched her foot and the Pig shot forward. Her eyes flicked down to the speedometer. One hundred thirty kilometres an hour. About average for her.
The side mirrors glowed again. The trailing vehicle was within thirty feet, suddenly twenty. She swept the bike right.
Tires screeched and the headlamps followed. She grinned. This was what dulled the rage: an adrenaline charge electrified by cutting too close to the edge.
Tempest could make out the boxy silhouette of a truck's cab, a shadowy figure hunched over the wheel. The truck's bumper shot up to the Pig's rear, missing it by centimetres. The fun dissipated, replaced by terror...

on July 17, 2010 :
This is a fast, sometimes frenetic, ride through the lives of the two damaged protagonists, psychologist Tempest Ivory and cop Patrick Painter. Furlong's prose bristles with action words and punchy qualifiers, slugging images into the reader's skull. The scenes are short and intense, often moving from one character to the other, presenting events and memories that reveal the almost too coincidental interweaving of their lives.
Among the plenitude of dead bodies and tortured memories is the theme of opera, specifically Verdi's Rigoletto. The joys and sorrows of the singer, and the healing power of music are presented in a heartfelt and interesting way, providing relief from the main themes of murder and madness.
This is a memorable and compelling read, despite a few improbable situations and a somewhat bleak conclusion (though not without a glimmer of hope). I was definitely gripped and had to keep reading to the end.

A wonderful read.
Suspenseful, lovely twists, strong characters.
Also unique themes skillfully intertwined.
I much enjoyed this book and hope Ms. Furlong pens many more.
