I squinted at the clock. Six-twelve. I was considering maybe rolling out of bed when I heard a heart-stopping noise—“AARgk—” from the living room. A shout, unmistakably Larry’s, cut off in the middle like a bale of hay had dropped on him out of heaven.Then silence.
No chunk-skrreek of the opening door or morning sounds from outside (Larry usually left the door open, even when the air conditioner was on, while he went down to the end of the driveway to get the paper from the mailbox). No sounds from the kitchen. No flap-flap of his untied Adidases coming back down the hall with his coffee and the sports section.
I jumped up and ran out to the living room. It was empty. Nothing but Larry’s dirty white tennis shoes, sitting at awkward angles to each other smack dab in the middle of the living room rug.
