Set two millennia in the future and a third of the way across the Galaxy from Earth, the story follows the life of the central character and the mercenary unit in which he serves. The collapse of the Terran Empire gave rise to freelance explorers and privateers. Eventually an organized system of professional mercenary units came to dominate warfare, although government space fleets and armies still exist.
A relatively new threat comes from the depths of space, the Mosh raiders. They were selectively bred as a slave race to serve as cheap labor for the Terraforming Corporation of the Terran Empire. A small group managed to rebel and fled deep into the Galaxy with a couple of ships and an advance knowledge of terraforming. After digging through the historical archives of their ships, the Mosh realized they most closely resembled Nordic people in appearance and then ..
