I like the fact that these characters were thought up from the writer's childhood an implemented beyond the scope of a scooby doo mystery.
The book is very entertaining and it kept my interest throughout. I recommend this book for any zombie fans for a weekend read.
My only issue is the plot is still the same, where you have survivors held up in a "safe zone" attempting to make something out of life. The only difference here is you had superheroes that had some advantage.
Also I was hoping for some more character buildup. The chapters that went back to each person's previous lifestyle just didn't do much for me.
Thanks for taking the time to write this book and I enjoyed it very much

As I was reading this book I was thinking that these superheroes are definitely characters the author thought up as a kid. In the afterword, he admits just that, giving me a sense of satisfaction at having figured him out.
That fact doesn't detract from the book in the slightest. I gave it an honest 5 stars because I enjoyed it from cover to cover. It's a quick, fun read with a lot of action and a unique twist on the zombie apocalypse.
The book is not perfect. Anyone can nitpick. I had a little trouble keeping track of the normal humans while finding the heroes distinct. Despite some cliche, though, the characters worked for me. Above all, in a market flooded with garbage, Ex Heroes is a book that kept me interested enough to choose it over television 10 times out of 10.

In short, Ex-Heroes is not the book I wanted it to be. While it's simple and sweet in throwing together superheroes and the undead, throughout the book, a lack of polish, especially as regards characters, gives the impression that what I read was not intended to be the final product. Every character speaks the same way, thinks the same way, and all the ones that don't--are zombies. On the zombie side of things, Mr. Clines nails it. He's got them creepy and undead in the best possible way, and he writes them very convincingly. But the superheroes, the POINT of the novel, come across as juvenile, simplistic and generic. Only the mysterious Stealth comes across as different, and she is kept rigidly in character, but when it comes time to read from her perspective, it feels childish, a misunderstood, simple view of what it's like to be burdened by genius.
While the characters suffer from cookie-cutter-syndrome, the action in the book is great, especially as the book comes to a close. The climax is epic as hell and a lot of fun.
I can only hope that Mr. Clines improves on his craft and possibly returns to this world with a sharper eye, more discerning editing, crisper characters. Until then, make mine Marvel (zombies.)
