Thea and Edric have been in a terrible car accident, leaving the vampire unharmed but Thea in a coma. In the days following Edric must come to terms with his true feelings for Thea. Does he honor his promise not to turn her? Or does he selfishly prevent her from dying in order to keep her with him for an eternity?

We look at the weekend preceding the accident: Thea wants a quiet weekend away from the vampire community she has fallen into and chooses Block Island as her destination. On the ferry she meets Ted, a man who harbors a deep secret and who has come the Block Island to end a lifelong curse of torment.
