About Shayne Parkinson

I write historical fiction set in New Zealand, starting in the 1880s. My fifth novel takes the series to 1918. I'm fascinated by social history, particularly that of my own country.

I live in a state of barely-controlled chaos; fortunately I share my life with an invariably calm and endlessly optimistic husband. I divide my time between an apartment in the city, in reach of good espresso, and a few acres in the country, where the rank grass in the orchard is kept under control by a small mob of sheep (and where we have our own espresso machine).

When I'm not writing, reading, or engaged in mundane activities, I play the piano rather badly.

After reading the first two books in the series, there is nothing more I can really add to all of the other 5-star reviews. It's gratifying to find the type of reading I prefer in the the deluge of action, vampire, sci-fi, and apocolyptic that is available. Well-written, with attention to formatting, spelling, and punctuation, which, as a new Kindle owner, I have discovered is a far bigger issue than I would have thought. Will be purchasing the third in the series.

Sarah is impressive a woman who knew what she wants and goes for it, she is a wonderful daughter to Amy. Beth in her own right is a strong woman understanding David and helps him to cope with the struggles within. her patience and love for him endearing and truthful.

"Mud and Gold", being the second book in the series, picks up from the first book "Sentence of Marriage". The story follows Amy's challenges as she tries to navigate married life.

I would love to take more time to write this book the review it deserves. Parkinson's writing style is simple, elegant and yet able to transport the reader directly into the minds of the people who populate the story. You feel the swells of happiness and the crushing despairs. His descriptions often touch on all senses- smells, sounds, sights, textures- without overwhelming the reader with unnecessary detail. The pacing is good: he's not afraid to follow Amy in her daily life for a few days and then allow time to pass so that subsequent events don't feel forced.

Definitely recommended. I hope there's more from this author in the future.

At times this book was very difficult to read because the abuse talked about hit a little too close to home, but I loved it just the same. As in the first book of the series - Sentence of Marriage - the author brings the characters to life in a way that makes me feel I know these people. Even though my e-reader has page numbers at the bottom of each page, I was so engrossed in the book that I was taken by surprise when it ended. Again I was thrilled to see that there is yet one more book in this series and ordered it the same day I finished this one. Thanks again, Shayne Parkinson, for another great read.

My family is from New Zealeand, and it so wonderful to hear aout their lives in the 18th century. Jayne has done a fantastic job, and I have enjoyed every single page that has been written. Amy is a character that has been brought to life for me, as well as Lizzie, Jack, Suzzane, Charlie, Malcom, David and all the others. This book does not disappoint - wait until you read the last one - SETTLING THE ACCOUNT - you won't be able to put it down. I promise. I have purchased all the books in the series. The series is a compelling story of hardship and triumph. Highly recommended.

Excellent book and service. Once I read first book in the series I had to purchase and read the rest. Can't wait for more from this author.

I downloaded Sentence Of Marriage free...once I read it I was hooked. I loved each and every character that Shayne created. In just over a week I found that I purchased and read every book in the series and at the end of A Second Chance I was left almost devistated that it had ended. There are so many things that I felt I needed answers to and am really looking forward to the next book! These books are so beautifully written - what a great talent Shayne has!

I downloaded Sentence Of Marraige for free and when I had finished and saw it was a series I had to find out what happened with Amy next. So I got on here and got the next book! Great Book!

A real page turner - Amy is such a compellingly believable character -- enduring all that abuse yet never losing her own sense of self. The other characters who populate the town and the story only add to the many layers of this famil sage -- I feel as if I know them!

I LOVE this book and the entire series!! I had downloaded Sentence of Marriage for free and became absolutely hooked on Amy's story. The night I finished the first book, I couldn't get back to the computer quick enough to purchase the next ones. I love the time period and setting of the stories and I find myself drawn so easily into every single character in the book(s).
Two huge thumbs up to Shayne Parkinson - She's done an amazing job here!!

Reading this book surprized me how I could feel the emotions of the characters. I couldn't stop reading and when the book ended I purchased the rest of the series and read them as well. Many books are repetitive and predictable, this series was not.
