In the ancient time of wishtongues, wizards and talltalists, the Family Tanox and their Principles cloak their empire in darkness. As fingers of the Tanox darkness begin to strangle those near the fringe of their ever-expanding empire, an unlikely hero emerges from a cave in the land beyond the beginning of the end of light. Zennan embarks upon a quest to free his people of the Principles, a quest that has destroyed his father, his brother and others who have attempted to break the encircling chains. On his trek Zennan is periodically joined, guided and sometimes misled by curious creatures, wizards, yellow-eyed wishtongues and lowly villagefellows, many of whom mysteriously know more about his quest than he himself.
Inside the Castle Krog, Ra-Tanox, the successor to the Tanox family empire is tenuously served by his Grand Black Sorcerer, the leader of his rampaging Scirocco horse soldiers. In his most recent raid the sorcerer kidnaps Meeshannette, the daughter of a lowly villagefellow, as she brings a horse to Zennan to further his quest. Having been instantly infatuated with this impetuous and beautiful young woman, Zennan promises a weeping father the safe return of his daughter.
Inside Castle Krog invading circles of mysterious winds reveal to the Grand Black Sorcerer the emergence of a power greater than Ra-Tanox. Meeshannette, the captured beauty now the property of Ra-Tanox, and a single warrior traveling without an army are said to be catalysts of this powerful transformation. Ra-Tanox scoffs—these two, nor any child born of their coupling, could not possibly end the reign of the Family Tanox. After Ra-Tanox takes Meeshannette himself, a nightmare she only vaguely remembers, he throws her into the deepest dungeons beneath the Castle Krog. Quick witted and equally quick-of-foot, Meeshannette escapes her incompetent guards, and with the aid and sacrifice of the dungeon’s imprisoned creatures of enforced darkness she makes her way to the surface world.
As Meeshannette seeks freedom from her soldier pursuers, Zennan is working his way toward the Castle Krog. They meet amid rocks, hiding from the crashing hooves of the searching Grand Black Sorcerer’s soldiers. Zennan and Meeshannette escape to a quiet land where time passes quietly until she gives birth to the child that is from the seed of Ra-Tanox. Zennan learns of the need for the child and its harbored evil to be destroyed, but such is not so easy for a mother to let go.
Meeshannette is soon following her life’s twisted destiny. It is a destiny intertwined with that of Zennan as they work to destroy the Tanox reign of terror, but at a cost neither would ever voluntarily accept.
