Barrie and Jan McMahon have had a lifelong interest in the way people engage in sports and other pastimes, stemming from the friendships they have made through participation in sport – as players, administrators and fans. They are fascinated by how people interact within cultures which reflect but also reshape the wider Australian culture.
The same focus on culture and communication has driven their work as professional educators. They have written text books for teachers and students of media studies.
Fannie Bay to Flemington is the first book they have written together. It explores the same theme through the true story of a discarded race horse that rewarded his connections handsomely, both financially and in terms of the rich lifestyle they share. Although those who participated in the excitement of the journey are as diverse in personality as any other cross section in the Australian community, they all draw from the traditional Australian ethos. The reader is taken from the cities to the rural and remote regions of Australia where the bush culture still infiltrates the lives of all Australians be they city slickers, bushies, fifth generation Australians or new arrivals.
Barrie and Jan McMahon live in Perth, Western Australia. They have two sons, two daughters in law, four grandchildren and various extended families whose cultures they celebrate.
