When an ancient relic is discovered on Mars many questions arise on how a 3,000 year old relic became buried in a Martian sand dune. The paleontologist, Buffy Wingo, does not trust the authorities so she travels to Earth to find the answer. When she arrives she sees how society has changed on Earth and how the silence hinders her search for the truth.

In 2114 paleontolgist Buffy Wingo is digging up fossilized Martian microbes. While digging in the Procter Crater she finds something very unusual, a figurine carved out of a midnight black rock and a bleached white bone. She knows she has seen the figurine somewhere before.
She runs tests on the black figurine and the data comes back as columnar lava. The only place that there is this kind of lava is Earth, there is none on Mars. The data on the white bone comes back as fossilized organic material, possibly from some Martian life form.
During the night she remembers where she has seen the figurine before. One of her professors at the university, Max Schrader, would bring in books about ancient societies. In one of his books was a drawing of a box with two of these figurines on the lid. She contacts Max and he agrees to help her on her search.

One night when they are walking back from dinner an intruder attacks her. The intruder wants the figurine. When they get back to the apartment she overpowers the intruder and they tie him up. His name is Ted and he belongs to a freedom fighting group called New Day.The group broke into her space communication and they saw the figurine. They belive the figurine could hurt the authorities. They take Ted on as a partner to find the answers.
Their search takes them to Ethiopia where they locate the ancient box on an island in Lake Tana.
The elders on the island come up with a plan to present the ancient box and her figurine to the public. A big soccer match is being played in a couple of days. After the game they will bring the items out on field so everyone will see them.
The night before the game they are making preperations in a warehouse near the stadium. Buffy walks down the street for a breath of fresh air. A couple blocks away from the warehouse she sees vehicles pulling up to the warehouse. The authorities run into the building and shoots everyone inside. As she runs towards the building a manhole cover pops up. Another member from New Day pops up from the sewer. He gives her a choice of either coming down into the sewer or be killed by the authorities. She climbs down into the sewer. She chooses life.
