About Nicky Charles

Nicky Charles is an independent writer/publisher who became an author quite by accident. She always saw herself as a ‘reader not a writer’ and can thank—or blame, depending on the day—her friend/editor and fellow author, Jan Gordon, for the career she now finds herself immersed in. The tale goes something like this:

In January of 2009, Nicky penned a fanfiction for an old TV series, “Scarecrow and Mrs. King”, and soon became ‘hooked’ on story telling. She joined a fan-based group for the show and through there met Jan Gordon. It was an idle comment made by Jan during a review of Black Silk (Jan’s newly published book) that inspired Nicky to write her first original story. Over the course of the next two months, she hastily scribbled down a suspense driven romance entitled Forever In Time and presented it to the world in August of 2009. Soon after, she wrote The Mating, a paranormal romance and followed it up with The Keeping and The Finding. The three stories formed a loose paranormal trilogy called The Law of the Lycans. Nicky continues to expand the Lycan series and has a long list of possible plots waiting in the wings.

Nicky works full-time and writes in her off-hours, few though they may be! In the next few years she hopes to retire from her day job and concentrate more of her energy on her new passion of writing.

When she writes, Nicky sees the story unfolding in her head like a movie and tries to include enough detail so that readers can ‘see’ the story just as she does. The sights, sounds, smells and sensations of a scene are almost as important to her as the actual plot.

Creating main characters that are ‘real’ is also something she strives for. Nicky tries to make each character different, to give them an interesting back story, to make their actions and feelings logical and to hopefully make the reader actually care what happens to the people in the story.

Nicky lives in Canada and tries to stick to Canadian spelling and punctuation in her work, in support of her country. She is an avid supporter of animal shelters, nature conservancy, food banks and a variety of other charities. Currently she has two ‘inside’ cats and one official ‘outside’ cat though a number of strays seem to take up residence in her garden each year.

When not writing, Nicky enjoys reading – though she often bemoans that she seldom has time for it any more. Her favourite authors are Elizabeth Peters, S.C. Stephen and Cherise Sinclair. She also enjoys spending time out in nature, gardening, taking day trips and eating dark chocolate.

As far as I am concerned, Nicky Charles is right up there with the likes of Norah Roberts (whose writing I adore). Nicky, you never fail to keep me turning the pages right to the end and there is never a disappointing moment. I am pleased to learn that you plan to charge for your books. You most definitely deserve to earn from your outstanding writing. Please keep your fascinating stories coming.

This book was amazing! I enjoyed all the refreshing twists and turns in this plot. This talented author packed a lot of action into a love story that kept me engrossed until the very end. I may have missed a little sleep but it was well worth it. I look forward to reading any and everything that this author may ever write. If you are perhaps reading this, I wish you the best in your career and I hope you keep writing!

I rate this series higher then twilight, 50 shades and the Sookie Stackhouse series and I enjoyed all of those books but the Nicky Charles series is something special, each book as good as the previous never a boring page. It would make a great HBO TV series. Looking forward to the next... ;-)

I read this book first. It didn't matter to me what order they were written in as the characters are woven into the series. A character might be a central thread in one book and a minor thread in another, but it all weaves together.

In love with the wolves!!! I must say, I didn't expect to fall head over heels for this series but that is exactly what I did. I found myself alternately laughing at the silliness and worrying over the perils of the characters in this entire series. I love the fact that Nicky Charles does this for the love of writing and requests only that donations be made to animal charities. As an aspiring author myself, Nicky Charles is an inspiration as an author and a human being and for that I can only say Thank you!

Okay, let me start by saying this book, in fact the whole series, was free. The author only asks that the reader consider making a donation to their local animal shelter or food bank, which is pretty awesome when you think about it. Now for the book, I had a little trouble with this one. I love werewolf books, and I enjoyed another book in this series a great deal. That being said, I was frustrated by this one. It had all the elements of a great story, strong characters, conflicts, a dastardly but unknown villain...but it just seemed too drawn out for me. It's just my personal preferences, but I like a bit more action to be going on and a bit less time speculating on past incidents and future possibilities. Overall, it was pretty good, but not my favourite. I will however be reading the rest of the series. I think there's great potential here.

When reading a lengthy series it isn't uncommon to have things start to fall apart 3 or 4 books in. Not the case with the Law of the Lycan series. Though this book is numbered 0.05, it is apparently the fourth one published and is every bit as good as the first. [I've some how gotten out of order and read it third, but I think I'll live.]

Reno and Brandi are a heart wrenching couple. If ever there was someone you wanted to kick and then scream, "Come on, figure out their feelings already...and your own too, while your at it" in their face these two are the ones. Both try hard to do right by the other and suffer for their efforts. But I also had to respect that mutual sacrificial attitude. It also just served to make the conclusion more moving, though it did feel just a tad rushed by the time it all finally came together. I liked that Reno was strong and sexy but also inherently flawed, both in his own estimation and as a character. He felt fragile despite his strength. You don't see that too often. Brandi was ever exasperated, but you could relate to her difficult position. I really liked Damien too and can't wait for the next one about him.

I've noted a clear change in the wolves as the books progress. In book one the human and wolf were as one, with no noticeable difference in persona. By book two the wolves were exerting influence on their human counterparts, and here we find that the wolves are distinctly separate characters. They and their humans discuss problems, fight for control, and argue over decision. I'm undecided if this is an improvement or not. Be that as it may, I'm enjoying the series and intend to continue with it.

After reading all of this author's books, I can definitively say that I hope Nicky Charles will return to fiction! This particular work was sexy, intriguing, and so compelling that I read it in less than two days - often when I should have been doing something else! I am very impressed that the author was able to craft such different characters for each novel while still staying true to the chosen genre and weaving together all of their stories. I truly wish there was more available.

The cliff hanger had me in suspense so I hopped onto the computer ready to download the next book in the series"Forever In Time" only to find out that I can't find it anywhere....
There is also another plot point near the end that was not cleared up, in deference to those who haven't read it yet, all I'll ask is this: What were the findings at the mine site when looking for missing persons?

If anybody has a soloution to this I'd like to know, and from some of the reviews I've read, I seem not to be the only one.

Initially, I was surprised that the series didn't continue where the 3rd book left off. I was thrilled when a couple of names from the rest of the series were mentioned, showing that this book actually preceded the other 3, in terms of it's timeline. You could probably read this book as a stand alone or out of the order of the series.

I really loved the characters & the story of Bonded. It was done in the great fashion of Nicky Charles. That means great, intense, emotional, deep & complex... as well as exciting. It got pretty intense. It's one of may favorite books.

The way that the Lycan history was weaved through the story was very interesting. I loved the ethical issues & how prejudice was a major theme. The good guys were so good & the bad guys were SOOOO evil!

I fall in love with your characters... even the secondary ones. Since I care so much about them, I want a nice, tidy happy ending with everything falling into place. So, I was NOT thrilled with the cliff hanger at the end! If you leave us with a cliff hanger, it's only fair to have the next book ready to pick up the pieces.

Please, Nicky Charles, I beg of you to please give us another book to put things right. I'd be forever in your debt! The poor soul at the end of Bonded deserves his world to be put right.

Bonded precedes The Mating in the Law of the Lycans timeline. You could read this before The Mating if you wanted to without any problems but then I would follow the course of Book #1 The Mating, Book #2 The Keeping, & Book #3 The Finding.

Reno’s an Enforcer for Lycan Link who finds himself thrown into a strange mishap with Brandi. Reno really likes Brandi but can not get a grip on his feelings for her. His job comes first. Brandi is just graduating & embarking on a new career as a Disaster Control officer, she has had a crush on Reno even before their first encounter in the self defense class. She falls for Reno at first sight.Enforcers and DCs don't mix, how will this work?

An accidental one sided blood bond, 2 Rouge Enforcers, mistreated 1/2 breeds, & a traitor. This story has action, drama, sex, romance.

We also get introduced to Damien & see a bit of his life & what happens to tame his wild wolf.

Great book. I loved the other 3 in the series as well. Looking forward to the next one.

I LOVED it! I would recomend it to anyone (Of age) and beg them to read it. You got me addicted and they were the only books I read until I had read them all. The only thing that I would have liked was to know what order they went in. I read 'the mating' before bonded and soon became determined to figure out which order they went in. But other than that small mundan bit of confusion. I fell in love over with each page I turned.

As always Nicky Charles delivers an exciting tale of erotic romance between shape-shifters. I love the characters and the factors regarding the characters background and the hierarchy of werewolves packs. This information adds so much to this book and the other books by Ms. Charles.

The characters Brandi, Reno, Damien, Klaus were truly characters readers can love as family members. Their constant love for each other and the community reinforces that as a people we need to get over the racial nonsense and pettiness of small-minded, mean-spirited individuals and do what is right and will help our society exceed and bring about lasting joy and peace.
I loved the manner in which Reno, Damien were loyal to each other regardless of what others thought or said. Their friendship allowed growth and willingness to learned from one another. The kinship of the half and the werewolves as pack members illustrates that real love is an unbreakable bond that grows in spite of the weeds of discontent that try so hard to choke it to death. Terrific work!!

Thanks Ms. Charles for an enjoyable and meaningful read. I look forward to your next book.

Once again Ms Charles has delivered an outstanding story ffilled with deeply lovable characters and vilians that we can hate. This book is worth the time to read and will keep you on the edge of your seat. It was tough to stop reading at night and just go to sleep. Reno is lovable characfter dealing with his own fears and I hope to hear more about him. Thanks again Ms. CHARLES and please keep them coming. BTW I took your advice nd made a donation to my local shelter.

However, I'm with another reader here when She mentions being frustrated about how the Brandi/Reno feeling for eachother thing just seemed to drag on too long. Nicky Charles' Law of the Lycan novels are brilliant and I was excited to find out that she had written another one, only this time Bonded is the prequel to the other three stories. It isn't necessary for Bonded to be read before the other three novels, but it does help with the understanding of Lycan Law as well as hearing about some of the much loved characters that are in the other novels.

Bonded is the story of Brandi and Reno and how with their chosen careers, there is never a right time to kindle their love, let alone admit that they are each others mates. This has everything you would expect from a Ms. Charles' novel, excitement, brutal fight scenes, defending love of a mate as well as the pack, making sure all abide by the Lycan Laws and sexy passionate mating scenes.

My only grumble is that I found some parts slightly repetitive in respect to the feelings that Brandi and Reno have but won't admit it to themselves or each other. I felt at times we were going around the houses and was slightly frustrated that it wasn't moving on. With that said, the story halfway through definitely picks up momentum and has a couple of twist and turns that keeps the reader enthralled. It certainly did me, couldn't put my kindle down until the final word was read, which I must say was heartbreaking and I'm looking forward to the next instalment, just to see what and who Ms. Charles writes about next.

if you haven't read this series and like reading about werewolves then you have been missing out on a great series --- Nicky Charles gives everyone free access to her books by ebooks so what are you waiting for ---- starting with The Mating, then The Keeping, The Finding, and just recently The Bonding, you will become immersed in a series that will keep you cativated from start to finish and leave you with wanting to know more. These stories have a little of everything from hot romance to lots of action and adventures while thoroughly immersing you into the lives and emotions of its characters. I highly recommend this whole series and you will find that this is a series you won't want to put down once you start reading.(

Another great read from the "Law of the Lycans" series. As is typical of all of Nicky's books, the characters completely draw you into their world making it impossible to put the book down. Reno is the penultimate male lead and the story has more twists and turns than a rollercoaster. "Bonded" is a perfect balance of suspense, angst and romance set in the fascinating world of the Lycan. For any fan of PNR or general contemporary fiction, you will not be disappointed in a book (and a series) that is truly a breath of fresh air. Highly recommended.

I definitely concur with the other reviews in that I could not put this book down! Nicky Charles' writing keeps getting better with each book (having read the entire triology of the Law of the Lycans series). Excellent build up and character development and the mystery was not nearly as easy to figure out as it was in The Mating. I cannot wait for the next book, secretly hoping it will be more about Damien :)

I loved this book as much as the previous three. I am sadden that Beth had to die the way she did, especially since she was expecting too. Poor Damien, that part completely broke my heart. Once again, I've fallen in love with the leading male of the book, Reno was a brilliant character and like all the other leading males from your novels, he will always have a special place in my heart...that includes Damien lolz. I hope Damien finds another love, and if I recall correctly, he made an appearance in The Finding and is now following the character Sam? ... I hope I'm not wrong lolz.

Bonded by Nicky Charles
Prequel to the Law of the Lycons
Nicky Charles Law of the Lycon series are excellent books. Bonded is the newest book but it's the prequel to The Mating, The Finding, & The Keeping. At the end of The Keeping we hear a little bit about a werewolf named Damien and in Bonded we hear more of his story. If you have not read the other books I think you could read Bonded first.

In Bonded we meet Reno Smith. He is an Enforcer with Lycon Links but is doing mandatory teaching at the Academy, required every 4 years. He always believes he could go rogue so he stays out of relationships and the Enforcers are his pack, his family. A trio called the Black Devils, all black wolves, gains his attention. Kane, his half-brother Ryne and Damien. Reno eventually brings Damien into the Enforcers, the best place for those who have no family or pack to go back to.

Brandi Johansson is a student at the Academy. She wants to get into Disaster Control by using her imagination in helping Lycons. She noticed Reno Smith right away and her friend Tabitha sets it up for Brandi to help him in his class for teaching fighting moves. Something happens during that time and it seems to pull them together, yet they always part fighting.

The villains in the book are the Purists. They are making slaves out of the halves. They want to go back to the old rules where Lycons could not marry humans. The Enforcers jobs are to get the halves and their families out of those packs. Brandi's new job as a DC is to clean up after the Enforcers. Twisting the stories so that the humans believe people have just moved and such. Another great addition to this series!

Nicky Charles just keeps getting better and better. The plot in Bonded is a little darker than those in the previous three books, but that just makes for a more interesting read.

I fell in love with the hero, Reno, from the first chapter. If you pick up this book, you won't be able to put it down until you finish reading, and then you'll be on pins and needles waiting for the next book in the series.
