The critic of the title can best be described as an arrogant, self serving hypocrite who has managed to convince himself via his superior intellect that his personal requirement should be put before those of anyone else. surprisingly his best friend also holds the same opinion of himself. The only difference is what one demands on the grounds of his dazzling intellect the other gets due to his unbelievable good looks, even if they are tempered by his almost sickening vanity. Well that is what normally happens until a woman called Wrey enters the scene. She too comes from a privileged background, but unlike them she has no major character flaw. No instead, she has many minor flaws that in her particular case actually enhance her personality. Though what is even more surprising is that she is actually comfortable with herself and in many ways a fully rounded individual. Most people might even get to like her if they were ever given the opportunity, which is highly unlikely being she exists solely in a rarefied atmosphere of private clubs, functions and exclusivity.
but this story is not about her though she does play a major part in it. No this short story is mainly concerned with the arrogant assertion of its author that future biographies may overlook his greatest personal triumph. So it is in the shape of a love story that he describes in great detail how he first met Wrey. And how he deliberately frustrates his ‘best’ friend’s amorous advances and takes the prize for himself. Yet just at the moment he feels he finally has her to hold, she is stolen back and in one devastating moment his whole life is destroyed. Feeling humiliated, he wages a war of attrition against his detractors. But sadly, he has miscalculated the frailty of the human condition that ultimately culminates with him and his best friend being left heartbroken.
