THE RED FLAGS SURFACED in the year 2000 and her illness—dementia has deepened each year.
Anna has had dementia for twelve years, and during these years Anna and I have had a great life. As her husband and primary caregiver, I have been able to keep her vibrant and alive by using a common-sense approach, reading articles concerning this illness, gathering as much information as possible from all sources, and retaining information that related to my wife’s dementia.
Currently, Anna does not know me or the family all the time and she is in and out with her emotions. In spite of this we are still able to enjoy our life together. Since the inception of this illness, we have attended a ﬁtness center on a regular basis and have kept our bodies in good shape by working out three times a week. We also dance three nights per week at the Elks Lodge. We eat out or cook at home together. All this activity has helped us both to stay physically healthy and happy.
Our Book, Living with Alzheimer’s and Dementia A Caregiver’s Guide outlines how I dealt with each issue of Anna’s illness as it progressed. This information should not replace medical advice and ongoing treatment for Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. The information is intended to give you insight and ideas for hands-on assistance to the patient.
