Murder Off The Glass is the first of the acclaimed comic mystery trilogy by Michael J. Katz featuring sportscaster Andy Sussman, his lawyer/girlfriend Susie Ettenger and detective Murray Glick. Andy, the play-by-play announcer for the downtrodden Chicago Flames basketball team, finds himself suspended when his broadcast partner, Lester Beldon is murdered during a power blackout. He enlists his buddy, private detective Murray Glick, who has relocated to the Northbrook Court shopping mall and now prefers investigating golf handicaps to violent crimes. He turns to Susie to help him with his contract problems, trying not to make his romantic aspirations too obvious. With his future as a network sports announcer hanging in the balance, Andy finds himself in the middle of the hapless Flames retinue, including an errant point guard named Sly Thomas, dependable forward Dwayne Reddick, and hapless mascot Senor Flame. Originally published in 1987, Katz was compared to Donald Westlake and Gregory MacDonald. Chicago Sun-Times book critic Henry Kisor wrote, “The atmosphere is perfect…Murder off The Glass is like an off-balance jump shot that rolls tantalizingly around the rim before dropping through for the score.” The New York Times’ Newgate Callendar put it succinctly: “Get.
