Short description

Yukyuk is a speed freak and Harry sells weed and hash from his one-room apartment on 11th Street. One warm summer night in 1967, they have a problem, and that problem ends in murder.

Extended description

In 1967 I wrote this story for my 10th Grade English class. I'd written a fantasy novel in the 6th grade, but this was a much more serious attempt at fiction. It was the first story I ever typed on a typewriter. I wrote about the East Village even though I'd never been there, only heard stories from my friend Bugsy, who'd visited for a few weeks during the summer with our mutual friend Maarten. I'd been to Haight-Ashbury, which was also peppered with speed freaks, but that scene was tamer. I later met many of the characters when they migrated to San Francisco, passing through Urbana, IL. Of course, I immediately recognized Harry; he was the oriental in the group. The newspaper story was taken from a real incident that happened in the fall, involving a teenager who was part of this scene named Linda Fitzpatrick. Linda's death marked the end of a huge, wild party in the East Village and the crash-pad scene for runaways that had flourished for years suddenly began to disappear.

An original short story about some disheveled characters and their tatty lives, which manages to keep them sympathetic to the reader despite their actions.

I like how Bugsy says "Cat" and "pad".
Great story for a young guy!
