As Muhammad Ali celebrated his 70th birthday recently I began thinking of all the memories of the man who shocked the boxing world in 1964 and rose to become a legend, his battles both inside and outside the ring, and his eventual place in sports folklore.

Patrick Triplett is a longtime author and sports columnist who has published several books on boxing.
