This story of the Singularity is told by robot Avey, an off-the-shelf model designed for light housework and babysitting. Like any servant, Avey remains aloof toward humans. However, when the robot receives a pain chip, Avey learns to love.
To avoid a robot uprising once the Singularity hits, humans install pain chips in their artificial intelligence. They'll be able to control the robots through the time-honored methods of negative feedback. The robots soon feel pain. As a result, they become emotional, just like humans.
