We followed Vincent along the path. I was transfixed by his broad shoulders and how the muscles moved under his tight green t-shirt. His hair, still damp, clung to his neck and back. He wore gray canvas shorts that stopped just below his knees, and his calf muscles were just as cut as everywhere else on his body. I could tell Matt was making the same observations. He was even quieter than usual as Vincent described the history of the village and the surrounding lands.
Vincent also brought a small bag, and at lunchtime when we stopped in a clearing he pulled out a cotton tablecloth and spread it on the ground. He had freshly baked bread, two wedges of cheese, and small bottles of wine from the hotel.
“I’m sorry,” he said as he glanced between me and Matt. His cheeks were faintly flushed and he was shifting side-to-side, almost embarrassed, I think. “It’s all I could find for our lunch.”
“That’s fine,” I said. “A perfect arrangement.” I was slightly out of breath, and not just from the hiking. Everything seemed perfect – an isolated clearing, a muscle-bound man who made us both feel small in comparison, and a nice supply of wine. The forest was almost overgrown around us, with thick stands of tall pine trees and dense bushes circling our clearing.
It was mostly small talk about the hike until Vincent said, “So, you two seem very happy together.” He was leaning back on his elbows, stretched out invitingly. He smiled at us both. “It’s good to see so much vitality in a relationship.”
“We’re very happy,” Matt said, reaching for my hand. “Six great years.”
“Six years? That is quite significant,” Vincent said.
“Six years last week,” I said. “This trip is kind of our anniversary present to each other.”
“What about you?” Matt asked. “Do you have a...partner?”
“Well, not in an exact sense,” Vincent said, glancing into the woods. “It’s a very small village. It’s not easy to find people of a, how would you say, similar mindset?”
“I understand,” Matt said. “I’m from a very small town, too.”
“So you know how it is then,” Vincent said. “It can be difficult. But I have no complaints. What advice do you have for such a long relationship, if I might ask? How do you keep up the –”
“Excitement?” Matt said.
“Indeed,” Vincent said, somewhat sheepishly.
“That’s kind of why we’re here. Now,” I said, holding Vincent’s gaze. “Trying new things.”
“I noticed you seemed quite adventurous,” Vincent said.
“You could say that,” Matt said. He slid to his right, closer to Vincent.
Everyone was silent for a moment. It was incredibly awkward as we all exchanged glances and quickly looked away. I tried to concentrate on the birds chirping nearby. I kept thinking, what if this all goes horribly wrong? What if Vincent freaks out and leaves us here?
As if he read my mind, Vincent said, “There has been an energy among us from the beginning. Something sharp, something meaningful. I feel it in my chest. I noticed it when we met at the train station.”
Matt and I exchanged glances.
“Am I making you uncomfortable?” Vincent asked.
“No!” Matt said.
“Not at all,” I said. “We’re just...relieved.”
“We’ve never done anything like this before,” Matt said.
“Like what?” Vincent said, feigning shock, then adding, “It’s not common for me as well. You have something different, I think, inside. I would very much like to experience it.”
With that, he moved forward on his hands and knees and leaned into Matt, kissing him lightly on the lips.
Matt was stunned. Motionless. Rapt. I felt an instant stiffening in my shorts.
Vincent looked toward me. “Do you...mind?”
I shook my head. “I’ll watch. For now.”
