When Kelly Barton takes her first off-world posting to head the research team on Mapinkura, a pristine planet, it's supposed to be an easy placement. The planet is slated for colonization and development - the research time is almost over. Unknown to the researchers, however, the Sampang corporation has already, illegally, begun development.

When Kelly arrives, it's to find that the team has just discovered evidence of alien civilization. Enough evidence to put a moratorium on development. But if they can't get construction halted the sites will be overrun. And the corporation isn't interested in waiting.
