As Christina's research takes her from New York to Paris to the Tarn River Valley, she is pursued by an unknown foe who evidently will stop at nothing to pierce the text’s secrets and who somehow believes that Christina holds the key to interpretation. But how could information hidden within a centuries-old text possibly have value in modern times? Christina must find out, as it is becoming increasingly obvious that part of this mystery may literally be in her blood.

Villages cling to the cliffs, hanging over the river, or nestle into recesses. The only way in is by canoe, through dangerous rapids, or by driving on treacherous roads. Ancient landmarks are everywhere, housing ghosts of the past. Legends abound.
